How to Make Vegan Burger Sauce
To make this sauce, you will need to start by soaking your cashews. If you don’t soak the cashews, your sauce may turn out a bit chunky. This is fine if you don’t mind, but I prefer a smoother sauce.
The fastest way to soften your cashews is with boiled water. If you have an electric kettle, it’s even faster.
First, place the cashews in a bowl, then boil enough water to completely cover them. Pour the boiled water over the cashews, ensuring you cover them completely.
Then place an upside down plate over the bowl and let it sit for at least 20 minutes. Drain the water and your cashews are ready to use!
Once you have softened your cashews, place all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth.
If you want some texture from the relish instead of completely blending it into the sauce, start by blending everything without the relish. Then, add the relish to your food processor and pulse a few times until it is blended as much as you would like.
How to Make the Perfect Vegan Burger
The first step to making your vegan burger is to find a delicious vegan patty. I don’t have burgers very often, so when I do I like to indulge in a Beyond Meat of Lightlife burger. Of course any packaged, processed burger isn’t the healthiest option, so if you want something healthier, you can find a recipe for a vegan burger made with whole foods such as beans and grains.
Next, you’ll need a vegan bun. I also eat gluten-free, so I use these vegan and gluten-free buns from Little Northern Bakehouse. There are plenty of store-bought vegan buns, but vegan and gluten-free buns can be harder to find. There are also plenty of vegan bun recipes that you can find online.
Now, what really makes a good burger is all your toppings! Of course I recommend this burger sauce, but here are some other delicious add-ons for your burger. These are some of my favorites that I think go well with this vegan burger sauce, but of course there are many more options. Add whatever you like!
- Ketchup
- Mustard
- Sliced dill pickles
- Sautéed onions
- Sautéed sliced mushrooms
- Sliced tomatoes
- Lettuce
- Sliced avocado
If you are using this vegan burger sauce, ketchup and mustard isn’t even really necessary because it’s included in the sauce, but of course you can add more if you love ketchup and mustard.
Substitutions
- I use Frank’s RedHot Original hot sauce for this burger sauce, but if you can’t find it you can use another similar hot sauce as an alternative.
- Instead of regular yellow mustard, you could use Dijon mustard for this recipe.
- As with most recipes, feel free to adjust certain ingredients to your taste preferences. For example, if you want more onion powder, add some more. If you’re making changes like this though, I recommend adding small amounts slowly and tasting as you go so that you don’t accidentally add too much.
- The amount of water for this recipe can also be adjusted. This sauce is quite thick, so if you want it to be thinner, slowly add more water until it has reached your desired consistency.
Other Uses
This sauce is not only great for burgers. I also like using it in the following ways:
- As a veggie dip (it’s so good with carrots, celery, cucumber, and bell peppers)
- In sandwiches
- In wraps
- On potatoes
- As a chip dip (it’s especially good with tortilla chips)
Other Vegan Sauces and Dressings
- Plant-Based Cheese Sauce
- Sweet Potato Sauce
- Vegan Caramel Sauce
- Spicy Cashew Dressing
- Creamy Dill Dressing

- ½ cup + 2 tablespoons water or more to thin

- 2 tablespoons sweet relish
- ½ tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons vegan ketchup
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
Instructions
- Start by soaking your cashews to soften them. The easiest way is to boil water, then pour it over your cashews in a bowl and cover the top of the bowl. Let the cashews soak in the boiled water for at least 20 minutes.
