    Ingredients to look out for

    Sugar

Sometimes cane sugar is processed with bone char, which means that the bones of animals are used in the production of sugar. To be certain that cane sugar is not processed with sugar, you often have to reach out to the company and ask.

However if the cane sugar is organic, it is not processed with bone char. Beet sugar and coconut sugar are also never processed with bone char.

All of the chocolate on this list either uses organic cane sugar, coconut sugar, or has been confirmed by the company to not be processed with bone char.

    Milk

Milk is used in many chocolate products, so when checking if a chocolate bar is vegan, always look out for milk. Also check for milk powder, whey, casein, and lactose. None of these ingredients are vegan.

Most companies will state that the product contains dairy if there is milk in it, so this should be easy to spot!

    Natural flavors

One other tricky ingredient that may be found in some chocolate products is natural flavors. These can be sourced from plants or animals and the source will not be listed on the package.

To know for sure if these ingredients are vegan, you will need to contact the company. But unfortunately many companies do not reveal the sources of their natural flavors.

    Cross-Contamination

Some of the brands on this list make both vegan chocolate and chocolate that contains milk. If they make both the vegan and non-vegan chocolate in the same facility, there will be a small risk of cross-contamination.

This is why many of these brands will say that even their vegan chocolates may contain dairy. This does not mean that there is actually dairy in the product, but that the company has a responsibility to warn the consumer. This is most important for those with serious allergies.

Most vegans have no issue with a cross-contamination warning.
