Puffed rice cakes are a great vegan snack that you can put together quickly! There are so many toppings you can use on rice cakes, so the options are endless!

What kind of rice cakes to use
If you want to add toppings to your rice cakes, I suggest using plain puffed rice cakes, such as the ones that Quaker Oats makes. Many other brands make them as well, so use whatever ones you can find.
In order to be able to use them with a variety of savory or sweet toppings, stick to plain rice cakes. The only ingredient should be rice. The ones I use are made with whole grain brown rice, and that’s it!
Savory rice cake toppings
Here are some topping ideas for a savory rice cake, including spreads and ingredients for on top of your spread.
Spreads:
- Hummus (try this dill pickle hummus or any other hummus you like)
- Mashed avocado
- Plain or savory vegan cream cheese (try this onion cashew cream cheese)
Toppings:
- Chopped red or green onion
- Nutritional yeast
- Ground black pepper
- Crushed red pepper
- Cucumber slices
- Bell pepper slices
- Tomato slices
- Herbs (I like using basil and dill)
Sweet rice cake toppings
Here are some topping ideas for a sweet rice cake, including spreads and ingredients for on top of your spread.
Spreads:
- Nut butters (peanut butter and almond butter are my favorites)
- Try this chocolate peanut butter spread
- Jam or jelly
- Chocolate hummus
- Plain or sweet vegan cream cheese
- Apple butter
- Vegan caramel
Toppings:
- Fruit (slices of strawberry, apples, or banana are great choices)
- Vegan chocolate chips
- Shredded coconut
- Chopped nuts
- Raisins
Rice cake topping combinations
To put together your rice cakes, start with whatever spread(s) you are using, then add your other toppings.
Below are some of my favorite combinations of rice cake toppings, but go ahead and mix and match whatever toppings you love!
Hummus cucumber
- 1 ½ tablespoons hummus of choice (I like using roasted garlic hummus)
- Cucumber slices
- Sprinkle of pepper
- Sprinkle of dill

- 1 ½ tablespoons peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon jam or jelly of choice
Cream cheese and strawberry
- 1 ½ tablespoons plain vegan cream cheese
- Strawberry slices
Banana Cinnamon
- 1 ½ tablespoons nut butter (I use peanut butter or almond butter)
- Banana slices
- Sprinkle of ground cinnamon
Avocado
- Half an avocado, mashed
- Thinly sliced red onion
- Sprinkle of crushed red pepper
Peanut butter chocolate chip
- 1 ½ tablespoons peanut butter
- Sprinkle of vegan chocolate chips
