What is hummus toast?
Hummus toast is exactly what it sounds like. It is simply a piece of toast with hummus spread on it. But it doesn’t stop there!
You can add any toppings you like to create a variety of different hummus toast flavors.
You can also use any flavor of hummus you’d like, and it can be homemade or store-bought.
Ingredients for hummus toast
To make hummus toast, you will of course need bread of your choice, and hummus of your choice.
Roasted garlic hummus is my favorite hummus to use, as it pairs well with many savory toppings.
You can use as much hummus as you want, but I like using 1 ½ to 2 tablespoons per piece of toast. This will depend on your personal preference and the size of the bread you are using.
I will share my favorite topping combos below, but here is a list of ingredients that I recommend. You can use any combination of toppings that you like.
- Avocado slices
- Sauteed mushroom slices
- Sliced tomato
- Sliced onion
- Basil leaves
- Arugula
- Sliced cucumber
- Chopped nuts
- Seeds
- Nutritional yeast
- Ground black pepper
- Dill
- Crushed red pepper
- Any other spices or seasoning
My favorite variations
Tomato Basil Hummus Toast
- 1 slice bread of choice
- 1 ½ - 2 tablespoons roasted garlic hummus
- 2-3 tomato slices
- Sweet basil leaves
- Sprinkle of crushed red pepper
- Sprinkle of nutritional yeast
- Sprinkle of ground black pepper
Mushroom Hummus Toast
- 1 slice bread of choice
- 1 ½ - 2 tablespoons roasted garlic hummus
- ½ cup chopped cremini mushrooms
- Sprinkle of garlic powder
- Sprinkle of ground black pepper
- Slivered almonds
- Sprinkle of nutritional yeast
- Chopped green onion
For the mushroom hummus toast, you will need to start by cooking the mushrooms. Add the chopped mushrooms to a pan with a sprinkle of garlic powder and pepper. I just use a little water to sauté until the mushrooms soften.
Avocado Dill Hummus Toast
- 1 slice bread of choice
- 1 ½ - 2 tablespoons roasted garlic hummus
- ½ an avocado, sliced
- Sprinkle of crushed red pepper
- Sprinkle of dried dill weed
Cucumber Hummus Toast
- 1 slice bread of choice
- 1 ½ - 2 tablespoons roasted garlic hummus
- 8 round slices of cucumber
- Sliced red onion
- Sprinkle of dried dill weed
- Sprinkle of ground black pepper
Tips
- Make sure you prep all of your toppings before you toast your bread. It will take some time to chop everything up, and if you are using mushrooms you will need to cook them. You want all of this ready before your bread is toasted so that the toast is still warm when you put everything on it.
- When your toppings are ready and your bread is toasted, spread on the hummus first. Then put your other toppings on.
- If you are using any seasoning or spices, I recommend sprinkling them directly on the hummus to help them stick and not fall off.
