The original Cinnamon Toast Crunch is a sweet cinnamon square-shaped cereal. Cinnamon Toast Crunch has also made cereals in different flavors, as well as other products like popcorn, treat bars, and more.
But are any Cinnamon Toast Crunch products vegan? Find out below.
Is Cinnamon Toast Crunch Vegan?
The original Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal is unfortunately not vegan, because it does contain an animal ingredient. It also contains some other ingredients that strict vegans do not consume, such as sugar filtered through bone char. See a breakdown of all the non-vegan ingredients in the original Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal below.
Non-Vegan Ingredients in Cinnamon Toast Crunch original cereal
Vitamin D3: Vitamin D3 is added to all Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. Unfortunately, when Vitamin D3 is added to food products like cereal, it is almost always sourced from lanolin, which come from sheep’s wool.
Because it comes from a sheep, it cannot be considered vegan. There are however some vegans who still eat products with Vitamin D3 from lanolin because they feel it is added in such a small quantity that it doesn’t really matter.
Concerning ingredients for strict vegans
Sugar: Sugar is of course not an animal product itself, but the cane sugar used in packaged products in the US is often filtered through bone char. Bone char is literally charred animal bones, and it comes in contact with the sugar during the filtration process. This includes brown sugar, confectioner’s sugar, and any ingredients that are made from sugar, such as caramel color as well.
Some vegans avoid sugar that isn’t confirmed to be vegan, but many vegans are okay with bone char filtration because it is difficult to avoid when consuming packaged products.
Natural flavor: Natural flavor is listed on many packaged products and it can be sourced from any plant or animal products. It is often impossible to know what the source of natural flavor is because companies don’t usually reveal that information, even when asked. If natural flavor is from a common allergen, such as milk, this will be labeled on packaging for safety reasons.
However there are many animal ingredients that aren’t common allergens, so there is no way of knowing if the natural flavor in Cinnamon Toast Crunch products is vegan or not.
Vitamins and minerals that may be sourced from animals:
Vitamin D3 is the most concerning vitamin for vegans, but there are many other vitamins and minerals in Cinnamon Toast Crunch that may or may not be sourced from animals.
Many vegans will be okay with this uncertainty, but some will not. It’s up to you.
Are Different Flavors of Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal Vegan?
All Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereals contain sugar, natural flavor, and Vitamin D3. The Cinnagraham Toast Crunch cereal also contains honey.
So if you want to avoid Vitamin D3 from lanolin, sugar filtered through bone char, and/or natural flavors of unknown origin, you should avoid all Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereals.
