What to look for in a vegan cereal
Of course, the number one thing you need to look out for in a vegan cereal is animal products. You want to make sure there is no milk or dairy of any kind, but there are other animal-based ingredients that are sometimes disguised in the ingredients list. That’s why it’s best to buy products that are labeled as vegan.
Some ingredients to avoid (or at least question) include:
- Natural flavours: When “natural flavours” is on the ingredients list, there’s really no way of knowing what that really means unless you contact the company. It could be vegan, or it could be animal-based. That’s why I tend to just go for things that are explicitly labeled as vegan. It’s much easier than dissecting an ingredient list and contacting companies.
- Sugar: Sugar is sometimes processed with bone char, and again, if the product isn’t labeled as vegan, there’s usually no way of knowing how the sugar is processed unless you contact the company.
- Vitamin D: This often comes from lanolin, but there are plant-based sources as well. If it isn’t labeled as vegan though, it likely isn’t.
- Honey: There is some debate as to whether or not honey is suitable for vegans, but it does come from an animal, therefore it can’t be called vegan. If you choose to eat it though, that is your decision.
- Gelatin: Unfortunately, several well-know popular cereals contain gelatin, which is derived from animals.
What to look at on the nutrition facts label
Once you have determined that a cereal is vegan, just go ahead and eat it if being vegan is your only concern. If you are trying to find a cereal that is nutritious and beneficial for your health, there are a few things you should take a look at on the nutrition facts label.
Fiber
In any cereal, vegan or not, it’s good to check the amount of fiber per serving. I would recommend looking for at least 5 grams of fiber per serving of cereal. If your fiber needs are higher, look for even more per serving!
In the cereals on this post, I have included the amount of fiber per serving. Make sure you pay attention to the serving size as well, because if one cereal says 3 grams of fiber and the serving size is ½ cup, it has the same amount of fiber as a cereal that says 6 grams if the serving size is one cup.
Protein
People often don’t need nearly as much protein as they think, but it’s still important to get some protein into every meal. Everybody’s protein needs differ based on their bodies and activity levels, so figure out what your own protein needs are and ensure that the protein in the cereal you choose is adequate for your health.
Added Sugar
I have listed added sugar here instead of just sugar because there is a difference. Added sugar is often refined and unhealthy, whereas naturally occurring sugar, such as sugar found in fruit, is not something to worry about for most people.
Ideally, added sugar in a serving of cereal should be very low or non-existent. Go for the sugary cereal sometimes if you’re craving it, but try to stick to a lower added sugar cereal on a more regular basis.
Notes about this list
I have listed some allergens contained in the cereals on this list, but they are only the most common allergens. There could be something you are allergic to that is not listed below, so you always need to check the ingredient label on the package yourself, and if you are uncertain, contact the company.
Ingredients in these cereals could also change at any point, so I encourage you to always double check on the package that the cereal is in fact still vegan.
Also note, not all of these cereals are particularly “healthy.” Some have a lot of added sugar or oil, but I think this is fine in moderation. I stick to a mostly whole food plant-based diet, but I do indulge in processed vegan foods from time to time. Especially if you are just transitioning to veganism, allow yourself to have some less healthy treats every now and then. In the end, being vegan is about doing your best to eliminate the exploitation and suffering of animals.
